"We are delighted to receive our awards from Compassion in World Farming. Animal welfare is at the core of Good Food Nation and we believe that we share the same goals as Compassion - raising awareness and helping to eradicate live exports, cruel factory farming and a move towards systems where animals are treated with the kindness and respect they deserve. In our brand we wanted to address unnecessary cruelties - the destruction and live export of tiny male calves, the culling of dairy cows as soon as they drop below maximum yields or have any bothersome ailments, the move towards large scale dairies - cows are kept indoors all year round never seeing grass or breathing fresh air.

We also wanted to address that egg-laying hens are killed at 68-72 weeks irrespective of their health or productivity. A shed is emptied at a set date and all hens crated, palletised, loaded onto a lorry and taken to be killed. In Good Food Nation, our animals are treated as individuals. Each animal which produces for our brand will be allowed to live out their natural lives - the cows, the calves and the hens. Sex-selected semen, extended lactations, calves staying with their mums until they are weaned at 6-8 months.

This is inevitably a more expensive way to farm but we are finding that many consumers are more than willing to pay the necessary premium as they're so unhappy with how most farm animals are treated. Indeed we have received emails from all over the UK and around the world telling us it is what they have been dreaming of their entire lives. Many simply saying 'thank you'. It is important to not underestimate the numbers of animal lovers both here and abroad who given a higher welfare option, will choose it. And with growing awareness and communication through the internet and social networking, the days of things happening 'behind closed doors' are numbered.

We are happy to lead the way in demonstrating that the world can be a kinder place for the animals which produce our food. Our eggs are under the sub-brand Hen Nation, our dairy products Cow Nation and there are plans afoot for Goat Nation. It makes us very proud to receive the recognition and support of Compassion in World Farming."
