"Good farm animal welfare is the base of a sustainable retail business. Firstly, we considered the traceability of our products to see exactly where the animals had originated. Then we evaluated our priorities and have started to improve the housing conditions of laying hens in our supply chain. In 2009 we were awarded a Good Egg Award for our whole / shell eggs and since then we have been selling only cage-free eggs.

We are now working to improve the welfare of our broiler chickens. With "fairmast" we have found a broiler production system which matches our ideas. Our broiler range will therefore be based on the "fairmast" standard in the future. It can take time to put in place the right system. We needed several years to get this in place and now we are proud to be awarded a Good Chicken Award from Compassion, as well as another Good Egg Award for our egg product.

In the long term both animal husbandry systems and food safety must be continually reassessed and taken into account in order to meet the requirements of a sustainable supply chain."
